The story behind ChatExport
A privacy-first iPhone app built by a small indie team — because your AI conversations belong to you, not to a server somewhere.
Why we built this
ChatGPT became genuinely useful — but the moment a conversation ended, it was essentially gone. There was no clean way to save it, archive it, or share it without copy-pasting a wall of text that lost all formatting.
Screenshots felt clunky. Exporting through a browser produced ugly results. And every third-party tool we tried required handing over credentials or uploading conversations to yet another cloud service — which felt completely wrong for content that can contain sensitive professional or personal information.
So we built ChatExport: a native iPhone app that exports your ChatGPT conversations to PDF, HTML, Markdown, or plain text — cleanly formatted, entirely on your device, with no cloud involved.
The guiding principle was simple: your conversations stay yours.
How your privacy is protected
These aren't marketing claims — they're technical facts about how the app is built.
100% offline processing
All export conversion happens directly on your iPhone. No data is ever sent to our servers — because we don't have servers involved in this process. The app works without an internet connection once installed.
No cloud storage
Your conversations are never uploaded to any cloud service by ChatExport. Exported files land in your iPhone's Files app — under your full control. You decide what to do with them from there.
Face ID & Touch ID lock
You can lock the app with Face ID or Touch ID so no one else can open it on your device. This uses iOS's native biometric authentication — the same system that protects your banking apps.
No account required
ChatExport does not require you to create an account or provide an email address. There is no sign-up, no profile, and nothing to log in to. The app is yours from the moment you download it.
What we store about you
We do not collect, store, or process your conversation content. The app uses standard Apple analytics (opt-in, anonymised) to understand crash patterns and improve stability. That's it. Read our full Privacy Policy for complete details.
